Double vs triple glazing: what you actually need in Cyprus

Triple glazing adds a third pane and another gap. Here is what double and triple glazing each do, what matters more in the Cyprus climate, and how to choose the right glass for a project.

What the terms mean

Double glazing is two panes of glass with a sealed gap between them; triple glazing adds a third pane and a second gap. More panes and gaps generally improve insulation and acoustics, but also add weight and cost.

What matters most in a hot, sunny climate

In Cyprus the bigger comfort gains usually come from controlling solar heat and glare, not just adding panes. A well-specified double-glazed unit with a low-E coating and solar-control glass, in a thermally broken frame, handles most residential situations well. Triple glazing is more commonly justified where winters are cold, for high acoustic demands such as busy roads or airports, or for specific performance targets.

The glass does much of the work

The coatings and the make-up of the unit — low-E, solar-control tints, laminated panes for safety and acoustics — often matter more than the number of panes. The right specification depends on the orientation and exposure of each elevation.

How we specify glazing

We supply double and triple glazing and specify the glass per project — for the building's orientation, exposure and any acoustic or performance requirement — in thermally broken frames. Tell us the project and we'll advise and quote.

Common questions

Is triple glazing worth it in Cyprus?

Often it is not necessary. In a hot, sunny climate the bigger comfort gains usually come from solar-control and low-E glass in a thermally broken frame. Triple glazing is more justified for cold winters, high noise exposure or specific performance targets. We advise per project.

Does triple glazing keep heat out in summer?

The number of panes mainly affects heat transfer; keeping summer heat and glare out is mostly the job of solar-control coatings and the right glass. We specify those for sun-facing elevations whether the unit is double or triple glazed.

Is triple glazing much heavier?

Yes — a third pane adds weight, which affects the frame, the hardware and the sizes. It is one reason triple glazing is specified deliberately rather than by default. We account for it in the system we quote.

What glazing do you recommend as standard?

For most residential work in Cyprus, a double-glazed low-E unit with solar-control glass in a thermally broken frame is a strong default. We tailor the exact specification to the project.
